Alyssa Kay Stark, 21, the North Carolina woman who was driving the vehicle in a fatal crash March 19 in Wayland Township will spend 90 days in jail.

Stark received the jail sentence, a $2,225 fine and two years probation afterward from Allegan County District Court Judge Joseph S. Skocelas Oct. 11. in connection with the crash that killed Alexis Danielle Brown-Johnson of Grand Rapids, who was 15 years old.

Stark, a Grand Rapids resident who since has moved to Mebane, N.C., pleaded guilty to one count of operating while intoxicated and no contest to one count of a moving violation causing death. One of the conditions of her probation is spending 30 days on an anti-alcohol tether after release from jail. She also must complete an alcohol assessment, be present for a victim impact panel and abstain from all alcohol and drugs.

Brown-Johnson’s family said they were disappointed about the lenience of the sentence when the charge was reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor.

Stark lost control of her vehicle near the Wayland exit on U.S.-131. The car slid off the expressway into a ditch, rolled over and landed on 12th Street.

Brown-Johnson, one of the passengers in the back seat, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car. Two other passengers sustained minor injuries.
