The victim of a wrong-way driver in a traffic crash Thursday evening on U.S.-131 just south of 28th Street was a Wayland High School graduate.

Authorities said Jonathon Miles Yarrington, 27, was driving his Ford Edge north on U.S. 131 when a wrong-way driver of a Hyundai Sonata, a 25-year-old Grand rapids woman, struck his car head-on. Witnesses indicated she was driving south in the northbound lanes at about 70 miles per hour.

Police said they had received calls about a wrong-way driver from other motorists who narrowly escaped a collision themselves.

Yarrington was reported to have just taken a job with Founders Brewery and he and his fiancée, Melissa Ann Bazan, both lived in an apartment in Kentwood. They had two children, boys ages 5 and 3, and were planning to marry.

The accident caused traffic backups and temporary closing of the expressway near the site.
