The Allegan County Health Department’s issuance of orders for all school districts to mask up students in grades K-6 has prompted political responses from the Allegan County Board of Commssioners, the Allegan Dems and State Rep. Steve Johnson.
The County Board of Commissioners, in a special meeting Friday afternoon, voted 6-1 to ask the Health Department to rescind its masking order. Earlier in the week, Rep. Johnson issued a press release condemning the order, insisting that “unelected bureaucrats” should not have the power to decide policies within classrooms.
That logic leads us then to the notion that health policies should be left only to elected politicians.
So the Covid viral pandemic, now in the clutches of the highly contagious Delta variant, once again has been the subject of political differences.
Today the Allegan Dems release statement supporting the Health Department’s efforts to protect public health:
“The Allegan County Democratic Party stands with families who have endured hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As thousands of students head back to school in Allegan County during the ongoing public health crisis, it makes sense for the Health Department to ensure a safe start to the school year.
“In 1978, the Michigan legislature passed Public Act 368, which would later become known as the ‘Public Health Code.’ This law gives the local Health Officer the authority to issue an emergency order (MCL 333.2453) if conditions warrant it. The recent Health Department order mandating masks for grades Kindergarten through sixth grade is smart and backed by science. Cases of COVID among the young, unvaccinated population continue to increase and masks help provide a layered prevention method.
“Today’s 6-1 vote by the Board of Commissioners requesting the Health Department rescind their order was appeasement at its best and intimidation at its worst. The Board is placing themselves against the Health Department instead of working with them.
“The Allegan County Democratic Party recognizes the vital part that the Allegan County Health Department plays in making our community a safer place to live, work, learn, and play. We stand with the dedicated health professionals.”
It wasn’t long ago that Dr. Anthony Fauci, the national advisor to President Joe Biden, said if we would have followed directives now suggested by politicians opposed to vaccines, we would never eradicated diseases such as polio, smallpox and measles.
The irony here is that liberals are approaching this issue with a “Pro-Life” attitude while the other side is strangely “Pro-Choice.”
We really are going there in a handbasket.
All our politicians have turned into health professionals. From ex Presidents to governors and now county commissioners. Inject bleach drink bleach. No masks no shots it will all just disappear HAHA! If you have a health problem do not call your doctor call your state Rep make sense NO!! Maybe your state Rep will put a flower on your Grave.
Mr Longstreet
The only thing Rep. Johnson will put on your grave site is his sign promoting his re-election ??
Well said, Dennis!
Our leading immunologist Dr Anthony Fauci has changed his story more than once. Dont wear a mask, wear a mask, take a cruise dont take a cruise, shake hands dont shake hands, get a vaccine ditch the mask, wear two masks. Folks he is the highest paid by our Government and his story is continually changing. Who should we believe?
Cheers!!
Mr Wilkens I have read your comments for a long time. They make about as much sense as the dutch boy with his finger in the leaking dam to save the village. Dr Fauci did the best he could dealing with a virus we never have seen before. I wish you were in charge your advise to us all would be CHEERS.
Meanwhile Mr. Wilkins supported and voted for a US President who promoted hydoxychloroquine suggested LED lights to cure COVID-19 always with the “some people say cover.
President Trump told a New Hampshire rally on Feb 10 2020, “It looks like April, you know, when it gets a little warmer it miraculously goes away.”
Then at a Feb 27 news conference President Trump said, “Its going to disappear. one day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.”
Always count n the Yeah but crowd to question scientists when the political leaders they support disagree with public health official, virologists, infectious disease specialists and pulmonary surgeons.
Trust the folks telling you to take vet medicine for equine parasites. After all there are studies from Argentina, Bangladesh, Egypt and Peru with 200 to 500 in trials showing it might work. Pay no attention to the over 150 million people in the US who have gotten vaccines. Can we count on folks like John Wilkins and State Rep Steve Johnson to travel to those 4 countries for life saving treatments for anything? That stuff is for other people. Right Mr. Wilkins?
Have another drink. Maybe a double of hydroxychloroquine.
