The City of Wayland has decided to get even tougher on cigarette smokers who light up within the confines of the Wayland City Park.

The City Council Monday night unanimously agreed to have an ordinance prohibiting smoking in the park drawn up and voted on at a future meeting.

Councilman Rick Mathis provided the impetus for the action, acknowledging there already is a policy in place, but he and his colleagues want something with more teeth to discourage the practice, particularly now that it is even more family friendly with the splash pad, renovated basketball courts and new playground equipment.
