Word on the street is that Wayland Motor Sales, which was shuttered last month by the Michigan Secretary of State’s office, has reopened under new ownership.

Woody Woodcox, who was sales manager at Cars2Go before it was closed last spring, reportedly has purchased the business from former owner Nick Oetman and has brought in about 50 cars and trucks for sale on the lot near the corner of North Main and Maple Streets. The parking lot was virtually empty last week.

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson had Wayland Motor Sales close its doors because of irregularities in proper registration and titles for the vehicles. She announced that Wayland Motor Sales and the Patriot Auto Group in Hastings may have issued improper temporary registrations or license plates as part of their vehicle transactions.

Secretary of State staff found the Wayland dealer poorly maintained records and repeatedly failed to apply for title and registration within the required 15 days of vehicle delivery. The licensee allegedly claimed that only four title transactions had not yet been processed but investigators discovered an additional 15 unprocessed tax, title and registration transactions from vehicle sales. Johnson issued a summary suspension of the dealership.

Cars2Go closed its doors last spring after five years in business under the management of Ron Schafer and its inventory was auctioned in mid-April. The lot at the former Wayland Chevrolet dealership has been empty since.
