Though Shirley Hamman retired in 1990 as Allegan County Home Economist, she continues to be active in county extension programs, such as the Culinary Arts division of the life skills program she developed many years ago.

Ms. Hamman, at age 87, spent Thursday evening at the Allegan County Fair once again judging for the culinary arts competition on Ladies Day, which she also developed many years ago with Jeanne Holland.

She started her position as Allegan County Extension Home Economist in July 1969. The county’s different extension study groups were established before she had taken this position. As she developed new life skill programs, these groups, including the one from Wayland, would attend the meetings.

Hamman also helped to increase the participation of the homemaker contest.

All good things never go out of favor. I only wish the schools still had one year of home economics and one year of shop. Middle school would be a good time for learning a little basics. I'm thankful that the 4-H program is still helping with teaching life basics to our children. Also, a big round of applause for the Allegan County Fair.
