The Wayland boys’ cross-country team placed seventh and the girls were eighth in the first O-K Gold Conference meet of the season Wednesday at Cedar Springs.
Junior Olivia Barabas had the Wildcats’ best individual finish for the day, taking eighth in the a field of more than 100 runners with a five-kilometer time of 20:13.79. She was followed by sophomore Elliot Antel in 40th, senior Mackenzie VanderWeide 55th, junior Emily Tuinstra 58th and junior Ruby Sidebotham 72nd.
Forest Hills Eastern won the meet with 40 points, Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills, which had the top two individual harriers, was runner-up with 94. Wayland had 189.
Ottawa Hills also fielded the top two boys’ individual runners, but South Christian won with 70 points and host Cedar Springs was second with 80. Wayland accumulated 139, while Middleville Thornapple Kellogg had 165.
Junior Devin Weaver checked in 18th to lead the Wildcats in 18:15.54, junior Travis Koon was 23rd in 18:27.49, freshman Dylan Pallett finished in 18:35 in his first Gold race, good for 26th sophomore Henry Odbier was 31st in 19:08.33, and junior Jared Jandernoa just missed breaking 20 minutes and finished 49th.
