Vibrant Grains drops restaurant, still to be a bakery

Vibrant Grains RestaurantThe Vibrant Grains Restaurant and Bakery is dropping the restaurant, but will continue as a bakery.

The restaurant was closed Friday, June 3,  and now there are plans for co-owners Celia and Virgil Gleason to grow the bakery.

Celia recently posted on Facebook, “We tried valiantly to win as a restaurant, but it wasn’t the right game. We were awarded the Number 2 position on Trip Advisor in the Wayland area behind the casino which is a pretty cool place to be! Top 10 best breakfast restaurants in West Michigan, thanks to your nomination and votes, even as a newbie which was pretty great. Never left our goal to serve you the very best we could and we got better. But black never won over red.”

Virgil indicated he and Celia are attempting to sell the building that currently houses the bakery and restaurant at 142 S. Main St. in downtown Wayland, with hopes of finding a smaller local venue.

Celia, now a retired teacher, not long ago took over duties as chief cook at the restaurant, which has specialized in home cooked meals from scratch.

“The change I made to be the main cook was partially financial,” Celia explained on Facebook. “What this position change did though is take me away from what I loved most, baking… This is not good-bye, this is seeing you soon.”

The Gleasons said the monthly folk concert get-togethers will continue, with organizer J.D. Gonzales, as will the Game Night.

“We will still book special events for those who would like to rent our space, and/or use our catering services. Then there are those frozen pasties back orders that need fulfilling,” Celia added.

Vibrant Grains meanwhile is producing ice cream cones for Dairy Ranch in Dorr and is negotiating with Aqua in Vino as a retail outlet for some baked goods.
