This recipe can help the grandchildren understand fractions and their value in knowing how to deal with them in everday life tasks:
Grandma’s Texas Sheet Cake
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
2 sticks butter or margarine room temp
1 cup water “hot”
1/3 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Combine flour and baking soda in a bowl.

Cream together in another bowl the butter, sugar and cocoa. Add the “hot” water and stir until smooth. Grandma did this on the stove.
Stir flour mixture together with creamed mixture. Add eggs milk and vanilla. Mix well. Spoon into a large 12 by 18 well greased cookie sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Enjoy the smell!
This is a great opportunity to show your grandkids with the measuring cups how 3 of the 1/3 cups make 1 full cup. Or 2 of the 1/2 cups make 1 full cup. Also you could make reference to 1 hour on the clock, every thing is digital now, explain 1/2 past, or 1/4 after.
Grandma’s Cocoa Fudge Frosting
Melt 1/2 cup butter or margarine in sauce pan, stirring in the 1/2 cup cocoa. Remove from heat. Add 8 tablespoons of milk, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla and mix in a 1 pound box of powdered sugar until smooth. Spread frosting evenly over cake while it’s still warm. Enjoy!
