A motorist who drove an airborne car that soared over the Dorr expressway overpass has been charged with driving under the influence of cocaine last Jan. 13.

Chandler Cockerham, then 25, of Kalamazoo, was arraigned Wednesday on one count of operating a vehicle with any presence of drugs.

Mark Huizinga of Huizinga Rebuilding & Truck Parks provided the video taken by a surveillance camera at the business near the ramp at the 142nd Avenue exit. The video showed Cockerham’s car drive up the dirt embankment at the 142nd Avenue exit and fly over the overpass, landing on the other side. It hit a road sign but not any other vehicles.

Cockerham sustained a cut to his head, but otherwise was not seriously injured.

Cockerham said he fell asleep behind the wheel. He admitted he had been drinking beforehand, saying he had two mixed drinks and a six pack of beer and then slept for four hours.

Court documents filed in May showed he had cocaine in his system when the crash happened.

He is scheduled for a pretrial hearing Thursday, Sept. 22.
