All WHS debate members place among top 40 in state

The Wayland Union High School Debate Team competed at the Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association State Debate Tournament Saturday in Dexter and experienced record success.

All 15 of the WHS team members of the team in attendance finished ranked among the top 40 debaters in the state. They included Novice Debaters Samantha Benham 12th, Grace VanderMolen 15th, Kendal Stroud 18th, Anabelle Pogodzinksi 23rd, Robert Bausick 26th, Eric Liddy 27th and Rylie Steuer 31st.  Varsity Debaters: Brandon Thornburg 14th, Jamie Murray (Captain) 16th, Andrea Ivers (Captain) 17th, Eli Merren 20th, Madelyn Probst 25th, Jacob Fredericks 27th, Samantha VerStrate 38th and Jarod Geerligs 39th.

The tournament included more than 300 students from across the state competing in various styles of debate. Wayland qualified 15 students to attend the tournament; all members of the team competed in Legislative Debate category. The students competed in two preliminary sessions of debate and broke to the final supersession at Dexter High School.

The tournament held two divisions Novice (first year competitors) and Varsity (two and/or plus years).

Coach Andrea Brown exclaimed that she is extremely proud of her team and is looking forward to next year’s season.
