Allegan County Covid deaths continue to climb

The death toll from the Covid-19 virus continues to mount in Allegan County, as the number reported Monday was 87.

Just before the holiday break, in late December, the Allegan County Health Department indicated the toll was 50. Only a week ago it was 73.

Some officials suggest holiday gatherings over Christmas and New Year’s contributed to the increase.

Meanwhile, the county’s number of cases has grown to 6,264, the number of those regarded as recovered now is 5,031 and 159 people from the county are hospitalized with the Coronavirus.

Michigan’s seven-day case rate had been going down steadily for more than six weeks, especially since the state health department’s shutdown of in-person high school instruction and meetings of more than a dozen people indoors. However, there has been a slight uptick this week.

The infection rate had dipped below 8 percent, but increased to just above 10% and now is hovering around 8 percent..

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Friday afternoon announced that schools will be encouraged to offer in-person learning options by March 1. All schools reopened last week after the holiday break, some after having held all classes via the Internet last month.
