Allegan man, 22, believed to have been killed in crash near Hopkins

Sheriff logoAuthorities believe a 22-year-old Allegan man was killed early Tuesday morning when the 2006 Chrysler Pacifica he was driving left the road and crashed on 128th Avenue between Hopkins Village and Hopkinsburg.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department said a passerby came across a single vehicle that had left the roadway and was up against a tree.  There was severe damage to the vehicle and upon the initial responding deputy’s arrival, a single male occupant/driver was found to be deceased in the vehicle.

The driver has been identified as Evan Jonathan Haffner. The investigation is ongoing at this time, but evidence at the scene suggests that drugs may have been a factor in the crash.

Initial investigation shows the vehicle was traveling eastbound on 128th Avenue when it went off the road after failing to negotiate a curve.  It struck a ditch and several trees, rolled over and ended up leaning against another tree.

The driver’s identity will not be released until later today, but the vehicle was registered to a 22-year-old male from the Allegan area.  The driver was belted.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office crash reconstruction team.
