Baker Elementary School’s art showcase, “Art Through the Eyes of a Child,” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 5.
Baker Elementary was the recipient of a “Picturing America” grant, which has helped start and sustain the program.
“Art has been an important facet of our school’s curriculum over that last few years, and this grant provided us another important avenue to help our children experience art through creating, reading, writing and discussing artworks,” said Principal Celeste Diehm.
“Art Through the Eyes of a Child” features:
1) “Distinguished Artist” Series, art wall where children’s art is featured. It stands in the foyer of our building emphasizing that children and their creative talent are at the heart of a comprehensive education.
2) Artwork created by our children in art class with teacher Christopher Rupke, whose lessons incorporate famous artists, everyday materials used in unique ways, and important media techniques. Rupke is also the person behind this art event.
3) Projects based on the Picturing America grant materials created by children (ages preschool through first grade) under the guide of classroom teachers.
4) Special exhibits in the media center, including video of r children at work in the creative process and Distinguished Artist presentations.
5) New this year: All visitors will have access through any mobile device to get information on each of the exhibit projects – this will include video introductions by our students.
Jan Fedewa, director of the Michigan Humanities Council, also will be on hand at Baker for this event.
