The much-maligned weatherman and weatherwoman weren’t kidding when they told everybody there was a big winter storm a-comin’ Monday. There were differing prognostications, some suggesting 8 to 12 inches of the while stuff, others 7 to 11 and the most optimistic 6 to 10. Just about every school district in West Michigan called it a day before the sun arose and Harding’s Market reported a run on essential food items Sunday. Hopkins was supposed to play makeup basketball Monday evening against Kelloggsville, but that one had to be rescheduled for a second time. Many on Facebook have posted comparisons between this development and the legendary Blizzard of ’78. This photo, supplied by Michelle Miller-Spicer, appears to be at the 131 exit at Dorr. The cover photo was supplied by the Michigan Department of Transportation just south of the Bradley exit on the freeway.

Anyone who compares this weather to the blizzard of ’78 wasn’t here in ’78. Not even close. Roads were completely closed to anything but emergency vehicles and snowmobiles. We had baseball players living with us and they went through the neighborhood shoveling driveways and walking to the nearest store to buy supplies. The drifts reached nearly to the edge of our roof.
