Andrews has stepped down from his position to continue his battle against cancer.

The Boosters and members of the community turned out to celebrate his contributions and commitment to the local organization.

Missy Ritz Johnson, whom he succeeded as president a year ago, spoke at the event, as well as pastor Mike Hewitt from New Life Church.

Some people who were not able to attend also said a few words about Andrews.

Tiffani Dollarhide, mother of Wildcat basketball standout Hope Dollarhide, said, “We support Tom. He is outstanding!”

Head varsity football and baseball coach Mike Doupe said, “Tom is great. He will be sorely missed!”

Michelle Hunt-Shyne, parent of wrestler Cameron Shyne, said, “Fact — Mr. Andrews does rock!”

David Merice, father of Wildcat softball player Abby Merice and WHS grad Kayla Merice, said, “We wish we could have made it, but but we had a little softball to tend to,” referring to the Wildcats’ tournament at Gull Lake. “Thanks for all you’ve done, Tom!”

Shelly Salisbury Whitley, parent of two Wildcat athletes and former member of the Wayland Board of Education, said, “As a Wayland alumna and current parent of athletes in the district I am very grateful that Tom has a heart for Wayland athletics and has Wildcat Pride. He has shown that through his actions. I have watched him over the past few years commit more time and energy to this organization and the group has benefited now and will for years to come. He has made his mark and left a legacy that we will continue to carry on.”

Originally from Grandville, Andrews was an emergency medical technician with Thornapple Township Emergency Services. He studied criminal justice at Grand Rapids Community College and respiratory therapy at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
