So now Yang, Patrick and Bennet are out of the Democratic primary race for president.
South Carolina, Nevada, Super Tuesday, California, then Michigan are looming. After them, we should havea pretty good idea of who’s in, and who’s out. Let’s take a look at the prospective nominees.
Young (and stupid) Hunter Biden’s short (but: remunerative foray in Ukraine, soiled and spoiled his father’s long and mostly good political record at home, with help from The Donald, who is very good
at besmirching reputations of people in one way or another. Joe Biden should have known better than to let it happen. Now it’s all over but the crying. Were Biden to be nominated, Trump would have a good opportunity to continue the daily smears of the past few months.
I’m sorry to see Elizabeth Warren faltering as well. She added a thoughtful air to the contest, but as she began slipping, she also began to sound like a preaching grade school teacher. Her message has been one Democrats ignore at their peril — stop bad mouthing one another, and get on with pointing out the long sad history of the creep living in the White House.
I’m sure any Democrat would love to have her in the Cabinet to replace Betsy DeVos.
I’m also expecting Bernie Sanders to falter soon in South Carolina, or even in Nevada., where he’s been strong in the past, but this year most of us realize electability is the critical issue, and we need to nominate someone who will “beat the bigot.” Bernie’s biggest problem is that he’s long called himself a Democratic Socialist and now has to play with the cards he dealt himself. I don’t think he’s holding a winning hand and is striking out against big money in the race, ignoring Warren’s good and proper advice to desist.
Amy Klobuchar could make a good running mate for a male nominee with her moderate stance on most issues, and the good boost she received in New Hampshire. But to do it, she’s going to have to start reaching out particularly to black and Hispanic women. But water is running quickly under the bridge and the flow likely will carry her downstream rather than up. We’ll see in Carolina and Nevada.
As for me, I’m still betting on Mike Bloomberg, despite repeated attempts by some to smear him over his prominent role in support of New York City’s “Stop and Frisk” law. Though his comments were tactless, maybe even tasteless, he was speaking the truth when he blamed most of the city’s crimes on young black and Hispanic men, against their own people. He has since apologized several times for his lack of tact, but not for the facts. They’re still visible daily in cities across the nation.
It seems very ironic that so many in the Democratic Party are now rallying around a billionaire. Was it not long ago when those with horrendous amounts of money were not looked on favorably by the Democrats.
But alas, the only way to beat money is with money.
Do the Democrats really believe this rich guy is really going to help the common man. I just bet he will take from the rich and give to the poor. ( if you honestly believe that….I happen to own some land West of Grand Haven that I’ll sell cheap)
Sadly, once again the Democratic Party can not field a candidate that will convince the voters that are still not sure if they want another 4 years of this current President to vote Democratic .
It is my opinion that unless the Democrats can somehow once again be a unified Party …there may no longer be a Democratic Party .
Start electing some sane people into office, not these radical headline making crack pots, with outrageous ideas on saving the world, giving everything away for free, etc…
Democrats get your game together…otherwise learn to live under the leadership if the Republican Party.
Mr. Hastings,
Sir,
Very good analyses of the Democratic field.
In your analysis you stated, “Though his comments were tactless, maybe even tasteless, he was speaking the truth when he blamed most of the city’s crimes on young black and Hispanic men, against their own people”. Mayor Bloomberg did the correct thing by placing the NYPD where the crime is, however somethings, true or not, are not allowed to be said. Mayor Bloomberg should of owned the comment and said he is not sorry he sent the Police where the crime is to protect the people in black and Hispanic neighborhoods.
You also said, “Amy Klobuchar could make a good running mate for a male nominee with her moderate stance on most issues, and the good boost she received in New Hampshire.” Once again correct but the “good running mate for a male” will get you called a sexist by the good folks on the left.
Barry’s analysis of flaws is accurate. He omits Bloomberg’s fatal flaw. The delegates from outside urban centers. Mike will have enough delegates to influence the nomination away from Warren, but no chance of gaining a majority for himself. A coalition with Buttigieg and Kochubar might be able to deny Burnie the nomination if they all backed one. The Clinton clique would go along. I think Amy might be the only one who could win in November, if Democrats unite. Bernie’s folks helped Hilary lose. They might do it again to another “corporate lite”.
