Wayland Middle School science teacher Lori Howell and Assistant Superintendent of Finance & Operations Patricia Velie, have started a Wayland Union Schools Beekeepers Extracurricular Club for students. in middle school and high school. A couple of informational meetings have been held and today the hives officially were started with nucs provided by Jim VanBeek, a friend of the district. Updates will be provided and a summer meeting date to maintain the hives and then again start weekly meetings next school year. Participants can learn about bees, about peoples’ ecological impact, and about harvesting honey.
It’s good for not only young ones, but older people learn that bees are very important to the environment. Not just for honey, they pollinate flowers fruits and veggies. If you like to eat and smell flowers you’d better like bees. They don’t bother you unless you bother them.
