The Wayland boys’ varsity bowling team finished third Saturday in the Jenison Invitational and the girls’ squad took fifth.
Brother and sister Haven and Dominik Baker made the awards presentation a family affair by both making the all-tournament team. Dominik rolled games of 210 and 190.
The boys qualified third out of 13 teams.
Coach Sherry Miklusicak said, “Our leadoff and anchor bowlers have done well lately, the rest are working hard. We are looking forward to practice this week and working on our chicken wings. Those may sound good if you are hungry, but not so good on the lanes.”
In the ladder finals, The Wildcat guys won over the Jenison junior varsity 181-121 and 167-174.
“Don’t let their JV status fool you,” the coach said. “Jenison is a D1 school with a very good bowling program. Two of their JV guys placed on the all-tournament team (so in the top 10 of all the bowlers there).”
Total pins moved the Wildcats forward to face the Red Hawks of Cedar Springs (No. 2 seed).
“I expected they lost a lot of talent to graduation, but they had some very athletic newcomers this season,” Miklusicak said. “Our boys just ran out of juice this game and were unfortunately beaten easily.”
But Wayland did well in the Baker games with scores of 180, 204, 203, 161, 169 and 198.
Rolling well in Baker games were: Dominik Baker who filled 14 of 20 frames (70%), Wil Dewing 13 of 18 (72%), Louie Harnish 16 of 20 (80%), Jayse Henkel 14 of 20 (70%), and Kyle VanEss 28 of 30 (93%).
The Wayland ladies qualified fourth and finished fifth, bowing out of the first step-ladder bracket.
“I’m so blessed to have this group of ladies!” Remarked coach Eric Bottrall. “They didn’t come home with the trophy but they gained valuable experience and time on the lanes today. Special times are ahead for my Wildcat ladies!”
