The Wayland girls’ varsity soccer team stayed even on the season Friday evening after battled nonleague opponent Zeeland West to a 2-2 draw Friday in its third match this week.

The verdict left the Lady Wildcats with an overall season record of 6-6-2.

Playing into a fierce wind in the first half, Amanda Brown was able to break the deadlock when she took a throw-in from Kennedy Thelen, spun her defender and beat the keeper to the near post for the half’s only goal.

The Dux came out with a vengeance in the second half and converted a penalty kick to tie the game.

Coach Ben Sleeman explained, “Later, a turnover and some quick transitional play gave Zeeland an opportunity from distance which unfortunately beat junior keeper, Lilly Bolliger to give the home side the lead.”

The Wildcats weren’t done, however, and late in the half, Thelen’s perfectly weighted through ball found Amanda Brown’s well timed run and she was able to find the back of the net for the equalizing goal.

Brown’s two goals bring her season total to 18, while Thelen’s two assists put her at 14.

Bolliger made 10 saves in the draw.

The Wildcats will wrap up their regular season with a road game Monday at East Grand Rapids and with a home game against Grand Rapids Christian Wednesday.
