The Hopkins varsity baseball team Monday overcame O-K Silver Conference rival Kelloggsville, 4-3, with a couple of clutch runs in the seventh and final inning.
Hopkins put up one run in the fourth on a fielder’s choice and scored the two winning runs on a two-run double by Caleb Ryan.
The Vikings and Kelloggsville exchanged the lead four times.
It was a good day at the plate for Zach Brechting, who went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. He tripled in the fourth inning and singled in the seventh.
Pitcher Michael Smith kept contact to a minimum, striking out nine Kelloggsville batters. Smith allowed one earned run, five hits and four walks over seven innings.
Kelloggsville jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first andf scored once in the fourth and the seventh.
