Caledonia motorcyclist dies in crash at Yankee Springs

A motorcyclist was killed and his wife seriously injured Sunday afternoon in a traffic crash in Yankee Springs Township.

Troopers from the Wayland post of the Michigan State Police reported that a trike-style motorcycle was traveling southbound on South Yankee Springs Road near Gun Lake Road when an oncoming Chrysler Aspen SUV turned in front of the motorcycle into a parking lot.

John Meyer, 59, of Caledonia, was killed in the crash and his 69-year-old wife was taken to a hospital with life-threatening. Both were thrown from the motorcycle by the impact of the collision.

Authorities said both wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

The 26-year-old Delton man driving the SUV, had no “obvious injuries,” police said, but was checked by medical personnel of the crash.

Authorities said they did not know if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Yankee Springs Road was closed for several hours while crews investigated before clearing the scene.
