Car strikes, kills 2 horses in Leighton; woman, 26, dies

A 26-year-old Schoolcraft woman was killed Friday evening in Leighton Townshi when the horse she was riding was struck by a car.

The auto struck two horses near the intersection of 146th Avenue and Ninth Street. The rider who was killed in the collision as 26-year-old Brittany Fender of Schoolcraft.

Allegan County sheriff’s deputies said the incident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Friday when three people were horseback riding west on 146th. The car, driven by an unidentified 22-year-old Byron Center woman, also was traveling west when it struck two of the horses.

Fender was transported to an area hospital, where she later died of her injuries. A second rider also was injured, but did not require treatment.

Deputies said the driver of the car was not harmed. Both of the horses that were struck perished at the scene.

Authorities said Allegan County sheriff’s crash reconstruction team was investigating.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Leighton Township Fire Department, Wayland Area EMS, Thornapple EMS, and Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office.
