‘Cat girls, boys enjoy 2 wins in track openers

Both Wayland track teams Wednesday afternoon took out O-K Gold Conference opponents Grand Rapids Union and Grand Rapids West Catholic in a trio-meet.

The Wildcat guys prevailed 115-22 vs. Union and 116-21 against West Catholic. The girls won 110-24 over Union and 77-59 over West Catholic.

Senior Landon Dunahoo was first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.49 seconds and he won the 200 in 23.16 seconds, a half second ahead of teammate Jake Reeder.

Brock Wheeler and Maurgan Howard went 1-2 in the open 400-meter run in 52.76 and 53.18 seconds, respectively.

Breslin Vandenbos, Dylan Pallett and Xander Stepek swept the top three places in the 800 with the winning time recorded at 2:10.18. Pallett came back to take the 1600 in 4:38.65, followed by Alberto Manujando and Mason Fein. All three crossed the finish line in under five minutes. Pallett won the 3200 in 10:5o.46 and Manujando and Ethan Manning finished 2-3.

Alex Hubbard finishThed second in the 110-meter high hurdles and in the 300-meter intermediates.

Though Union dominated the sprint relays, Wildcats Brock Wheeler, Maurgan Howard, Breslin Vandenbos and Landon Dunahoo combined efforts to take the 1600-meter relay in 3:40.77 and Pallett, Stepek, Howard and Vandenbos took the 3200 relay.

Adam Huff, Ashton Kasprowicz and Lucas VanPopering swept the shot put with Huff tossing 52-6. Huff, defensing state champion in the discus, won Wednesday’s challenge with a toss of 167-4.

Carter Marquard won the high jump with a leap of 6-2 and teammates Carter Williamson and Gavin Howard finished second and third.

Justin Springs leaped 20-2 to win the long jump and Marquard was second and Sincere Williams third.

For the girls, Megan Brogger and Quinn Reeder went 2-3 in the 100 and 200-meter sprints. Brogger found the open 400 more to her liking, taking the run with a time of 61.14 seconds and Ryleigh Haveman and Ayva Mulder went 2-3.

Freshman Bre Hoogewind cross the line first in the 800 at 2:38.48.

A trio Lady Wildcats. Taylor Vriesenga, Emily VanVolkinburg and Kendyl Scott went 2-3-4 in the 100-meter hurdles. Scott came back to take the 300-meter intermediates and Ashlee West and VanVolkinburg completed the top three sweep.

Kadence Coon, Kennedy Jasinski, Quinn Reeder and Ella Edwards combined efforts top capture the 400-meter relay in 54.64 seconds.

Brogger, Evie Mathis, Jasinski and Reeder won the 800 relay in 1:54.98. Haveman, Hoogewind, Mulder and Laney Wolf took the 1600 relay in 4:47.48. Hoogewind tossed the discus further than anyone else at 90-2. Addyson and Gwen Howard went 1-2 in the high jump with Howard leaping 4-8.

Megan Stack sneaked in first at 8-0 in the pole vault.
