Gary D. Empie, age 69, of Dorr, died of lung cancer Tuesday, June 15.
Gary was born on May 7, 1952, in Grand Rapids. After graduating from Catholic Central High School in 1970, he honorably served as a radioman for four years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Newport News CA-148. Gary married his late wife Teresa on May 8, 1981. They were married for 34 years.
After serving his country, he made his career as a Contract Manager at Smiths Aerospace and continued at GE Aerospace until he retired.
In retirement, Gary’s favorite pastime was fishing. His annual fishing trip in the Upper Peninsula was much anticipated each year. He was very generous in sharing his talents of woodworking and building with anyone who had a project.
He was a true friend to many, remembered for his storytelling and sense of humor.
He is survived by daughters; Brandy Weekly (Joshua), Anne Shultz (Victor), and Christine Empie, brothers; Jim Empie, Randy Empie (Rachel), Jeff Empie (Gail) sisters; Gayle King (Mike) and Suzanne Steele (Scott), and nine grandchildren; Samantha (Cameron), Collin, Caleb, Addison, Aiden, Charlotte, Adeline, Asa, and Carter.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Donna (Hillebrand) Empie, wife Teresa (Sebright), and daughter Jody Empie.
In his memory, a celebration of life will be held at the Loyal Order of Moose, 4204 20th St., Dorr, on Saturday, July 10, from 2 until 5 p.m.
In place of flowers, memorials may be sent to Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods.
Good man, passed to soon. We do not make ships like the Newport News anymore, heavy cruisers were great ships with great men serving on them.
