Former Wayland State Police Trooper Charles George died Wednesday. He was 83.
“Charlie” started his career in law enforcement in 1964 as a Michigan State Trooper at the Battle Creek Post and he was transferred to Wayland in 1966. He was transferred in September 1970 to the Enforcement Division of the Secretary of State’s office as an investigator. He finished his career as District Regional Manager for the Secretary of State before retiring.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia George; children Gail (Mark) VerHage and Tim (Tina) George; grandchildren Terry (Natalie) Jones, Brittany (Eric) Batenburg, Heather (Stephen) Wilkinson, Heidi (Kyle) Falkenstein, and Ryan (Sarah) VerHage; great-grandchildren Leo, Eve, Landon, Mason, Kaiden, Kaitlyn, Lucas, Hunter, and Emmett; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jamie Lee George.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the VFW Post, 735 S Main St., Wayland.
