Though Wayland Mayor Jennifer Antel told City Council members Tuesday night that at least one “strong candidate” has interviewed for city manager, city government essentially remains in limbo temporarily.

Since former City Manager Josh Eggleston left last month, Wayland is being served by interim managers both Jae and Gregg Guetschow, both walked city officials through examination of short term goals until a new city manager has been selected.

The Guetshows and council members outlined their top priorities for accomplishments in a period that could last short as another month to two months in this “limbo.” They listed policy and procedures manual update, technology changes, new City Park playground equipment and zoning map updates.

Antel said the items are those that “have to be cleaned up before the next manager comes in.”

Gregg commented, How do you set the standards? If you don’t focus on the fundamentals, they’ll come back to bite you.”

Antel said 17 candidates applied for the city manager’s post and she hopes to be have someone on board as early as later this month or October.

In other business at Tuesday night’s meeting, the council:

• Learned that the city water tower now has gone off line to accommodate repairs and cleaning. The popular splash pad tin the City Park now has been closed for the season.
• Aopted on a 6-0 vote a new agreement between the city and Wayland Township for fire services. It was said the new contract is more detailed and it includes establishment of a special Fire Committee.
• Learned from Finance Director Kateleen Balfoort that the bond rate for the street projects for Park, Church, Mill and Elm streets has been lowered from 4.2 percent to 3.8%.
