The Wayland City Council got a fairly extensive sneak peek of the proposed 2025-2026 budget Monday night.
City Treasurer Kate Balfoort gave a presentation outlining revenues and expenditures projected for final council approval before July. Her efforts were applauded.
Councilman Norm Taylor remarked, “Things seem to be clear and well thought out.”
Balfoort noted that about 69% of the revenue expected comes from local property taxes, which amount to 16.2 mills and $2.5 million. Another $560,000 comes from the state.
She said the largest expenses are in the police and fire departments, at 30% for police. An extra expense of at least $500,000 is anticipated for the sewer fund and an additional sum of at least $400,000 for water in projects.
The treasurer said she expects the city will spend about $106,000 more than it takes in, but that deficit will be handled with a significant fund balance.
In other business at the meeting Monday night, the council:
- Renewed the two-year contract for the cross connection control program with the blessing of Water Supt. David Paul.
- Agreed to negotiate an easement with Mill Street Apartments for $9,084 for installing a catch basin to handle standing water at that location.
- Approved expenditure of $2,500 for its contribution to the Allegan County Legal Assistance program.
- Was told the Police Department is getting ready to make a hire that will enable it to be at full strength.
