The Martin girls’ varsity basketball team absorbed its second loss this season to league-leading Saugatuck, 44-36.

The Lady Clippers’ season record fell to 5-5 while Saugatuck is cruising to a 10-1 overall mark.

Meanwhile, the Martin boys defeated the Trailblazers by a 52-39 count to even their overall season record at 5-5.

“We jumped out to a nice lead early in the first quarter,” said coach Brad Moelker. “Mitchell Jager is such a great shooter if he starts out hot it really lets us settle into the game.  He shot 5 of 9 from the three and is consistently hitting five or more threes each game.”
Jager led the Clippers’ scoring parade with 18 points, Collin Coburn counted 14 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, Gabe Meyers 6 points and 5 rebounds, Brayden Eckman 6 points and 4 assists, and Cole Altman 5 points and 5 rebounds.
“Collin had another good game overall,” the coach added. “He’s doing a great job of balancing when he should be attacking and when he should be moving the ball.  Teams know what Collin and Mitchell bring to the court every night so we’ve really been emphasizing the other guys being threats and I thought they did a nice job of that.  It doesn’t always show up in the score book but when they are a threat to attack it opens up so much for our team.  We just have to have the guys continue to do this every game.
“It was nice to make some adjustments on our defensive end. Saugatuck did such a great job of being patient and not forcing passes against the press that we were forced to change it a little bit. These are the things we need to constantly adjust so we are ready for it.”
