The Martin boys’ varsity baClipper Logo_6_4sketball team rolled to a 62-41 win over Wellspring Prep Tuesday in the opening round of the Holland Calvary Invitational.

The game was postponed from Monday because of weather conditions.

Garrett Dill led Martin with 20 points. Tanner Curry had 16 and freshman Carter Hilton finished with 14.

“We were able to jump out to an early lead and continued building on it as the game progressed,” said Martin Coach David Curry. “Defensively we did a great job helping in the paint and as a result they struggled to get to the rim.

“Curry got in early foul trouble and had to sit most of the first half. Dill did a great job of getting inside and drawing the fouls. All of his points in the second quarter were from free throws. He was 10 of 13 for the game and 8 for 10 in the second quarter.

Curry had particular praise for the freshman, Hilton.

“Carter played the best he has to this point. He ran the floor really well and was able to get some easy points in transition. He also had to step up defensively to take Tanner’s place at the post and did a great job there.

“Matt MacVean did not score, but I thought had his best game of the year. His decision making has steadily proved and he is getting really good at knowing when to push the ball and when to settle on running the offense.

“Overall, I thought we played well but we definitely need to cut down our turnovers and learn to not try to force our passes.”

Martin will play the winner of Holland Calvary and Howardsville Christian Wednesday.

The victory ran the Clippers’ overall season record to 3-1.
