The Martin boys’ basketball team came up a winner Tuesday night over Saugatuck, but the girls lost to the visiting quintet from the lakeshore.

The Clippers’ gymnasium was full of people wearing red to honor the memory of senior Mahrijana ‘Mahri’ Maya, who died last weekend

Martin boys won 48-29 over its SAC rival. Out of the gate, the Clipper boys dominated the court, They were up seven points after one quarter and 22 to 16 at the half.

Sophomore Cayden Curry led the scoring by putting up 17 points. He drained four deep three-pointers. Carter Hilton had 9 points on the game, and senior Logan Elkins contributed.

Teague Tiemeyer headed the effort for Saugatuck with 11 points. Jackson Shriver contributed 5, and Bradley Dunn was held to just 4 points.

Martin’s boys improved to a 4–5 record overall and are on a three-game win streak.

However, Saugatuck earlier in the evening drove past Lady Clippers to post 63-50 win.

The Indians were up by 10 at the half and Martin just couldn’t muster up a large enough effort.

Faith Guritz and Kiaya Warner led the Clippers, both contributing 15 points. Jaclyn Hildebrand put up 10 points.

Saugatuck’s powerhouse offense was led by Maddie Moore with 31 points.  The loss left Martin’s overall record at 5-6.

Martin students decided the best way to honor their close friend was to decorate her locker and wear red. The color red, according to one of Mahri’s close friends, was to symbolize the love she showed daily to everyone.

A public visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego. Donations, in memory of Mahri, are encouraged to be sent to the Allegan County Animal Shelter.

Between games, an emotional moment of silence was held to remember a girl who, “in many ways, radiated so much positivity at Martin High School,” said Martin senior class president Austin Marsman.

Both the Clipper boys and girls basketball teams wore red shirts reading “Fly High Mahri” during warmups and even wore red shoelaces. The mantra for the evening was “Play for Mahri.”

Both Martin teams will play on Friday night in Lawrence for a conference matchup with the Tigers.
