The Martin boys’ varsity basketball team completed its regular season with a 16-3 overall record, taking a 55-33 decision at Gobles Friday evening.
The Clippers, who will begin Class D District tournament play next week, grabbed leads of 9-5, 28-12 and 52-22 at the period stops, cruising in the fourth quarter. Cayden Curry led the offensive attack with 13 points, Clayton Geerlings added 12 and Carter Hilton 9.
“That was a great way to end the regular season,” commented coach Brad Moelker. “The players really came out committed to play intense on the defensive end. All of our guys were sprinting to their rotations, playing great helpside, and communicating the entire night. Overall I’d say that was our best defense of the year.”
Moelker added, “It’s actually a compliment that I can’t pick out one player who stood out on the defensive end. I literally thought all ten players worked as hard as they could. I thought Clayton (Geerlings) made some great decisions on the offensive end. He moved the ball and really tried to get us the best shot possible even if it wasn’t for him.
“Offensively we really focused on playing inside out. The majority of our points came inside the paint so it was great seeing everyone trying to attack the rim.”
The Clippers will open district play at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Tri-Unity Christian in Grand Rapids against Holland Calvary. If they win, they will play in the 6:30 p.m. Friday finale against either host Tri-Unity or Zion Christian.
