Martin took quite a gamble this week by taking part in the Cornerstone Holiday baseball tournament, and it came away with two losses and a lot of lessons.

The Clippers Thursday night lost 52-39 to another Class B opponent, Zeeland West, in their second straight attempt to upset a larger school. They lost 61-51 in the opening round to Forest Hills Eastern in a game that they were trailing by only two points with three minutes left.

This one was similar in that Martin was very competitive in the early going, trailing only 17-16 at the close of the first quarter and 29-25 at intermission. However, coach David Curry’s group managed only three points in the entire third period and the Dux pulled away in the last eight minutes.

Senior pivot Tanner Curry against proved himself capable of playing with the guys, scoring 22 points. He also had six rebounds and three steals.

Senior forward Andrew Boss also turned in a strong performance, dropping in 13 points and leading the team in rebounding with seven. He and Curry both had a couple of threes.

Unfortunately, nobody else on Martin’s squad scored more than two points.

Tanner Curry scored 36 points in the two contests against Class B opponents in the tourney.

Senior guard Logan Housenga scored 18 points for Zeeland West and 6-4 center Jayk Slager added 11.

The Clippers will take a rest for a short spell before getting back into regular season action. They now own a 3-2 overall record.
