Congressman Fred Upton calls it quits after 36 years

Fred Upton of St. Joseph, who has served in the U.S. Congress for 18 two-year terms, beginning in 1987, has decided to call it quits.

Upton announced his decision on the floor of the House of Representatives. His leaving avoids a primary election in August between and fellow Republican incumbent Bill Huizenga. Ironically, Upton first was elected in a primary in August 1986 against incumbent Mark Siljander.

The current Fourth Congressional district includes all of Allegan County, southwest Michigan and along the coast of Lake Michigan through Spring Lake.

Now if we could get a few demoncrats to retire. We can only hope Biden will retire next. Away into the sunset with the disgraced boy by his side.

  3. Don't Tread On Me

Fred Upton has been Democrat Light for his whole time in Congress. He was and is a RINO (Republican In Name Only) and a poor representative for our district. Good riddance!

  4. Laughable, so let me get this straight the three amigos are trying to tell us they never voted for Fred Upton a Republican who’s represented this area for more than 30 years? Just because the guy voted to impeach the president and save our country from traitors and preserve our democracy. I hope President Biden awards him the presidential medal of honor award he deserves it…… Skoal!

I cannot speak for the 3 commenters above, only for myself. I am a republican. I have never voted for Upton. He’s always been a RINO just as DTOM states.
Gar, do you vote only along party lines? Have you ever disagreed with a member of your party and been brave enough to not cast your vote for that person? Or do you assume that all Republicans voted for Upton because you yourself only vote for your single party of choice? I am a Republican, but if the Republican candidate is not up to par I am smart enough to cast my vote for the candidate I feel is best, whatever the party. Can you say the same?

I for one had to vote for the lesser of two evils. A RINO is still better that a Communist/Marxist Democrat they always have in place for the opposing party. I held my nose every time I voted for him. I knew the first time he ran he was a smarmy conniving little shit and he’s never proven me wrong in my assessment of him as a person.

  5. Concerned citizen, to answer your question, yes, I would and I do it in the primaries, but the Republicans I feel that would represent my views never win. But in the general election I vote straight ticket.
So if you didn’t vote for Fred Upton, did you vote for a Democrat?
I can give you an example when Governor Whitmer signed off on another tax exemption for the Switch Corporation in Gaines township. I was not happy. Even our own state representative, Steve Johnson, voted against it and I agreed with him, yet he’s a Republican.
Have you paid attention to our State Legislature? They’ve passed quite a few good bills on a bipartisan level. That’s what’s missing from the federal level it’s your way our no way there job is to represent the people, not one party or a dictator.
When Trump was president the Congress passed over 400 bills, but Mitch McConnell never moved them out of the chamber because he said he wasn’t going to waste his time, knowing the president wouldn’t sign them. I guess he had a crystal ball…….. Skoal
