Council offers city manager’s job to Erik Wilson

The Wayland City Council Monday evening decided to offer a contract for new city manager to Erik Wilson, current supervisor of Texas Township, next to KalamazooI.

Wilson succeeds Josh Eggleston, who left to take the Zeeland Township manager’s post. He was was one of three finalists interviewed.

Perhaps Wilson is best known as the former Plainwell City Manager for 20 years, from 2002 to 2022.

He said in his application cover letter, “As Plainwell City Manager, my family and I were immersed in the community. From school athletics to DDA events, I fully understand and appreciate the role of a ‘dedicated’ city manager.

“Our community (Plainwell) faced an enormous responsibility to begin the redevelopment of the former Plainwell Paper Mill. Over the past decade, we purchased the 36-acre Superfund site and brought economic life back to the property.

“In addition to the mill property, we maintained, and expanded, our industrial park. Our team also focused on creating a robust and inviting downtown.”

Prior to Plainwell, Wilson served five years as Decatur Village Manager, which he said “helped shape me as a manager and beyond. In Decatur, we celebrated regional cooperation, a strong village/school relationship and robust economic development. Our success with grant writing led to many community enhancements.”

He has served as Texas Township supervisor since March 2023, managing a budget of more than $15 million.

“Our focus has been on building a new township hall, renovation of our fire station, significant infrastructure projects and responding to the recent tornado damage. While I enjoy my role in Texas Township, as I approach two years of service I realize my desire is to return to city management in Allegan County.”

Wilson also has served in this area as a guest speaker and adjunct professor in public service.

No actual salary figures were mentioned, but the position pays more than $100,000 a year.
