Because of a glitch, Wayland City Councilman John Sloan will have to run for his seat as a write-in for the Nov. 8 general election.

Sloan was appointed in March 2015 to serve out the remainder of the term of Ron Kobish, who left the city for a new job.

Sloan’s partial-term appointment was to expire Nov. 20, 2015, so he ran in the November 2015 election to serve for a full term.

However, City Manager Tim McLlean said, “It was determined by the State Bureau of Elections that the partial-term appointment was invalid. Councilmember Sloan should have been appointed to serve out the remainder of the term.”

It was recommended by the Bureau of Elections and the city attorney that City Council take action to amend the March 2015 partial-term appointment to expire on Nov. 20, 2016.

If Sloan is elected Nov. 8, he will have a two-year term.

The other candidates on the ballot will be Mayor Tim Bala and council members Tracy Bivins and Tim Rose, both of who are unopposed for two-year terms. Sloan is the only write-in candidate known at this time.

Sloan, a recently retired counselor at Wayland High School and former assistant varsity football coach, is a graduate of Hope College and served on the Wayland High School staff for many years before retiring at the end of the 2012-13 academic year.
