Covid death toll in county continues to accelerate

The Allegan County Health Department Friday announced that there have been 32 deaths as a result of the Coronavirus over the last six weeks, bringing the toll since March 2020 to 212.

The weekly statistical report said there were 13 more Covid-19s deaths over the past two weeks. Meanwhile, Hopkins Public School students will take the whole week of Thanksgiving off in an effort to stem the tide after spending all of this week wearing masks in classrooms.

The testing positivity rate for the disease is now more than 22 percent, an increase from 19 percent two weeks ago. There have been 19 new hospitalizations over the past two weeks and the average daily number of cases over seven days has skyrocketed to 142.6 after showing in the mid-70s on Nov. 5.

A total of 906 cases has been reported being monitored in the county over the past two weeks, significantly up from previous reporting of 773. There now have been 360 hospitalizations from Covid in Allegan County since the pandemic began. The number of tests is 29,234, and 14,362 patients have been characterized as recovered.

Wayland reported three cases of Covid-19 at the middle school and high this week.

The Wayland Union High School Auxiliary gym was the site of a vaccine clinic Saturday, Nov. 13.

The Covid-19 statistics for Allegan County were not available for the previous week.
