The Ludema girls, one a junior and the other a freshman, and their family were involved in the effort to return to action this winter.

The Coronavirus has been wreaking havoc on the Wayland High School basketball program over the past couple of weeks, as the Wildcat ranks have been depleted by quarantines.

The Lady Wildcats’ game against Grand Rapids Catholic Central was called off Thursday night because of low numbers eligible to play. Catholic Central had the same problem, so there was no forfeit declared.

However, the boys’ team had many regulars missing from the lineup in a 78-33 loss to an undefeated Cougars’ outfit.

“We have experienced a number of positive cases this week, as you’ll find on the COVID-19 section of our website,” said Supt. Dr. Christina Hinds. “We remain in close contact with the Allegan County Health Department, which is monitoring our cases closely for any epi-linked cases. I plan to issue a district letter specifying this information.”

The Wildcat boys’ and girls’ teams were back in action Saturday afternoon against O-K Gold Conference rival Ottawa Hills. The boys went down 71-59, but the girls won on the road, 64-32.

The boys’ squad now sports a 1-8 overall record and the girls are 6-2, 4-1 in the league standings. The Lady Wildcats are the only team this season to defeat South Christian, 50-32, but since then they have lost twice.

There are reports that the teams now are back at full strength. The boys will play a non-league contest Monday evening against Allendale and the girls will resume action Tuesday against O-K Gold rival Kenowa Hills.

Dr. Hinds and the Board of Education last month agreed to bring the students back to the classroom and the Michigan Health Department opened the doors for contact sports to get under way, under serious pressure from parents and fans to “Let ‘Em Play.”
