Crude oil tank fire causes much smoke, no injuries

A fire that started in a tank with crude oil on 132nd Avenue in Wayland Township could be seen from miles around the scene Monday afternoon.

Frank Post, emergency manager for Allegan County, said the fire did not spread fire because the tank was made of clay.

It was known what caused the fire, but there were no injuries reported. Post said because clay contained the fire, there are no concerns about environmental or safety problems.

The Wayland Fire Department was summoned to the scene and was assisted by Dorr Township, Leighton Township, Hopkins Township, Martin and Gun Plain Township fire departments and the Department of Natural Resources. The Grand Rapids Fire Department sent a Hazmat team to the site.
