Curbside recycling is just starting up in Watson Township and residents are urged to sign up in order to have a container brought to their households.
The Watson Township Board Thursday evening was told that residents somehow should indicate they want the services, which approved in November 2022 by voters. The cost of $50 a year will apply to all households within the township. If a receptacle is sent to the house, but the residents don’t want it, they’ll still have to pay for the service and $25 to have it removed from the premises.

The township is working on sending out postcards telling everyone the recycling bins at the Watson Township Hall parking lot no longer exist. They were removed after the election results and after it was noted too many people were dropping their trash on site.
For those who want to turn in their postcards indicating their preferences, the township hall be open from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, and from 4 to 7 p.m. Mondays.
In other business at Thursday night’s meeting, the Township Board:
- Officially ended its contract with Republic for trash removal, but continued to do business with the company for curbside recycling. Arrowaste is taking over trash removal.
- Learned that plans for paving in 2024 will be on 1.2 miles on 124th Avenue near the Shelbyville exit on U.S.-131. The township’s cost will be $30,000.
- Adopted a resolution to accept the state grant of $150,000 for the Seven Generations Recreational Park at M-222 and 20th Street. The township’s match is $50,000.
- Agreed to buy two surveillance cameras from Anax Control of Hopkins. Final price tag will be $626.48, including installation.
- Was told by Sexton Mark Simpson that he plans to retire within a year. He said, “By the end of this year, I plan to have someone else doing this job.”
- Learned from County Commissioner Gale Dugan that Allegan County Health Officer Angelique Joynes will resign at the end of this month and join the military.
- Reported that the Court of Appeals agreed with Northstar Aggregates, LLC, and USA Earthworks, LLC, in its appeal of the Allegan County Circuit Court decision favoring the Watson Township Planning Commission’s denial of a special use permit to removal gravel at a site within the township.
