Dan Cassini elected head of Wayland School Board

Dan Cassini

Dan Cassini last month told his Wayland Board of Education colleagues he’d like to be president. He got his wish Monday night.

In the annual reorganizational meeting, Cassini was chosen president, Peter Zondervan was re-elected vice president and Tony Ordway re-elected treasurer and Janelle Hott secretary.

Cassini succeeds Cinnamon Mellema, who was not re-elected last November, and Hott succeeds Theresa Dobry, who chose not to seek the secretary’s post again.

All four candidates were the only nominees for the positions and all were elected on 7-0 votes.

The board also welcomed two new trustees, Jason Shane and Becky Hohnke, who were elected in November.

In other business at Monday evening’s meeting, the board:

  • Was told by Superintendent Dr. Christina Hinds that the high school’s auxiliary gym will be the local site for Allegan County Health Dept. Covid-19 vaccinations, but, “We’re not sure exactly when that would be.”
  • Learned by Assistant Superintendent for Finances and Operations Pat Velie that because of Covid-related problems the school district has developed a budget shortfall of almost $500,000, which eventually may mean it will have to be absorbed by the fund balance.
  • Agreed to vote Jan. 25 at the work session on a proposal to extend the 10-day leave for staff and faculty to March 31 for Covid. Dr. Hinds said the board will vote at the Jan. 25 work session as to whether or not the district will extend the Families First Coronavirus Response Act from Jan. 1 to March 31.
