Dorr 4th-grader organizes ‘Hoops for Helen’ fund-raiser

DSC_0260Wayland Union Schools fourth grader Cassie Reece, wanted to make a difference for kids at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and organized a fund-raiser called “Hoops for Helen.”

The fund-raiser will be held at the Dorr Carnival Friday, April 22,.  Carnivalgoers can toss three free throws to help raise money for the cause and Dorr PTO will donate a $1 for every wristband ticket sold.  Cassie already has raised more than $250 from staff casual days at Dorr Elementary and donations from the Dorr Library and Knights of Columbus and hopes to raise more tonight.

Cassie was inspired to help kids with cancer when her younger sister became friends with Dawson Babiak, a Wayland student who is battling leukemia.

“I hope the hospital will be able to help more kids with cancer,” said Reece.

The Dorr Carnival will take place at the elementary school, 4159 18th Street, Dorr from 5:30-8pm.
