Moline Christian School won the blessing of the Dorr Township Planning Commission Tuesday night to build an addition on the west side of its school building.
A representative from Dan Vos Construction out line the school’s plans for a 9.675-foot structure that will be used for classrooms, a lounge and that included parking lot additions. A concrete outdoor basketball court will be moved to a different location.
The representative indicated that construction of the addition will begin next spring.
The Planning Commission’s vote was 5-0, but there still is a stipulation for approval from the Allegan County Drain Commission.
A school officials said the addition is necessary because its enrollment continues to increase, now at 345 students for grades K-8.
In another presentation Tuesday evening, Kraig Koroleski earned the commission’s recommendation to rezone his property at 1872 142nd Ave. from B-1 medium density residential to planned unit development (PUD).
Zoning Administrator Lori Castello said Koroleski has come to understand his 39.76-acre site isn’t really suitable for residential, so he worked up a PUD that would include one residence, am accessory building, a landscaping business and some light farming area.
Castello explained, “It’s an unfortunate piece of property that would have been great for residential except for the location of a drain. And the soil can’t handle septic.”
She said his plan probably works under a “custom set of rules” that a PUD affords.
Commissioner Dan Beute remarked, “It looks like a thorough plan that was developed here.”
Koroleski himself said, “I noticed in your master plan survey a lot of people talked about (the desirability of) keeping it rural in the township” and added he believes this does exactly that.
The vote was 5-0 and his rezoning request will go before the Township Board Oct. 28.
