The Dorr Township Board Thursday night agreed that maintenance personnel called in to handle an emergency situation will be paid a stipend of $40 and time and a half for time spent on the work.

Clerk Debbie Sewers brought up the issue after an incident earlier this month when the township hall roof was leaking badly on a weekend. She noted there was no policy on what the worker should be paid.

“It’s not fair to just pay the employee $15 an hour for coming on emergency,” she maintained. “We should at least pay overtime.”

In other business at Thursday’s meeting, the Township Board:

• Agreed to let Trustee John Tuinstra work with maintenance personnel on repairs for the Then & Now historical library building across the street. The projects include brick work, sheet metal trim repairs and painting on wood siding near windows.

It also was reported that the basement in the building has a water softener that hasn’t been used and virtually no one was aware it existed.

• Learned that the Dorr Township Library, in the wake of the millage defeat in August, already has cut back on number of programs to one weekly.
• Was told by Allegan County Deputy Bernard Austof that there had been a string of attempted larcenies from cars and homes in the Ranchero subdivision.

“Anybody who locked their doors were safe,” he said. “Locking doors is highly effective in preventing these issues.”

• Learned from Fire Chief Gary Fordham that the department will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween night with doughnuts and hot and cold cider.
• Heard from Penny Post, representative on the Ambulance Board, that Wayland Area Emergency Services continues to be very busy, with a total of 3,637 to date this year.
