The Dorr Township Library is having to make adjustments on services it offers to residents in the wake of the defeat last August of a millage request.

The Township Library’s Board of Trustees, at its Oct. 21 meeting, “made several difficult decisions that affect all of Dorr Township’s residents,” said Board President Rachel Vote. “In order to keep the library open as long as possible, the board decided to make several cuts.”

These cuts include:

  • Beginning Nov. 1, 2019, the library will freeze its collection. No new items (books, audiobooks, DVDs, games, kits, binge boxes, etc.) will be added to the collection until further notice. Items purchased before Nov. 1, but not yet received will be added to the collection when available.

  • Beginning Dec. 1, the library will reduce open hours. Tuesday will now be a half day, and it will be closed Fridays. Resulting staffing shifts and cuts will also be effective Dec. 1. The new schedule will be Monday and Thursday from noon to 8 p.m., Tuesday 10-2, Wednesday 10-5, and Saturdays 10-2.

  • Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, the library will charge for most programs according to a pay scale that is to be determined.

  • In March 2020, the library will no longer continue its subscriptions to Ancestry.com Library Edition and Mango Languages.

  • In August 2020, the library will discontinue its subscription to Gale Courses.

Vote added, “As always, the library appreciates the input of this community. If you have questions or comments regarding any of these cuts, please email the library board at dorrlibraryboard@gmail.com or attend an upcoming library board meeting.”

The Library Board meets on the third Monday of every month at 7 p.m. Its next two meetings will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 and Dec. 16.
