The Dorr Township Board had discussions about more issues than just Facebook policy Thursday evening. Members talked about policies governing employees, even though there are only two full-time.
One debate was about initiating job descriptions.
Trustee Terri Rios, who favored setting up a committee to study the matter, said, “If we don’t have a job description, it’s not fair to the employees.
But Supervisor Jeff Miling objected, saying that for example the duties of maintenance man Jarrod Simon are so varies and extensive, it would be difficult to list them.
Treasurer Jim Martin said handing out job descriptions simply isn’t a good idea and it could result in legal and financial consequences.
“Our employees are at will,” Martin said. “The minute you put in these extra (in the employees’ handbook), the harder it is to defend in court. The more you complicate, the more you give the defendants ammunition, and the moment you step into the courtroom you spend $50,000.”
Miling said, “I’m with Jim. I don’t see any reason for this.”
The matter was tabled until pertintent information can be obtained from the Michigan Townships Association.
In other business Thursday evening, the Dorr Township Board:
- Received a brief communication and presentation from Thomas Lavigne, attorney with Cannibus Counsel of Detroit. Lavigne outlined briefly the provisions of the new state law that permits marijuana dispensaries and growing operations if local governments agree.
Thus far, the City of Buchanan and townships of Clare, Crockery and Pinconning have adopted ordinances permitting such facilities.
The board took no action.
- Agreed to allow distribution of ICE (In Case of Emergency) forms free of charge at township offices and on the web site.
- Heard a report from Clerk Debbie Sewers about the recent survey of residents, with 24 responses. She said she’s been getting a lot of inquiries about leaf dropoff.
Trustee John Tuinstra said he believes there more concerns about roads.
It was noted that the Allegan County Road Commission plans to do some culvert work on 18th Street north of 142nd Avenue to the Kent County line, which will affect vehicular traffic.
