Though some 2,500 people were reported to have been vaccinated at the Wayland site last weekend, there also were reports that hundreds were turned away because of fraudulent or mistaken e-mails.

Three Allegan County Health Department clinics were held at Wayland Union High School, which has been the site of such clinics weekly since early February. Health Department officials maintain the links sent in error are fraudulent.

But now health officials maintain it was an overused link that led to the problems and there was no fraudulent activity.

The link asked for hundreds of peoples’ names, numbers, date of birth and insurance information. The health department insists the link in question didn’t come from them and aren’t sure where it came from.

Luckily, no social security numbers were claimed by the link. The health department says oversharing is to blame.

Allegan County Public Relations officer Lynn Maunz told WOOD-TV News, “We’re glad to see that people want to get the vaccine and are using their resources and advocating for themselves to get the vaccine, however, with the process we have at the Allegan County Health Department to make your vaccine appointment at one of our vaccine clinics, the link will be shared directly to you from the Allegan County Health Department. So, if the link was shared to you some other way, your appointment may be canceled.”

She added that the health department would have vaccinated everyone who came to the high school, but there weren’t enough doses.
