The Wayland City Council Monday night approved the lowest bid for the next street project and the lowest bid for taking out the old playground equipment in the City Park.

Oetman Excavating of Leighton Township was awarded the bid for reconstruction of East Sycamore Street, which includes two blocks east of South Main Street. The cost will be $376,996.10.

City Engineer Mickey Bittner of Wightman & Associates, noting the reasonable proposed prices from 13 bidders, commented, “Obviously, it was a very attractive project,” probably because of the time of year when construction firms aren’t particularly busy.

The We Wings Montessori School, located not far from Steeby Elementary on East Superior Street, had the lowest of three bids at $100 for removing old playground equipment that will be replaced when the park is renovated this spring.

City Manager Tim McLean said the two other bids were for $2,500 and $3,100.

“So the equipment stays in the city, and it will be put to good use,” he said.

In another matter, the council approved a recommendation from McLean to hire Jason Hugget to the open Department of Public Works position. He said Hugget, who formerly had worked for the City of East Grand Rapids, will begin working Monday, Feb. 15.
