Education Foundation awards over $30,000 in grants

The Wayland Union Education Foundation awarded more than $30,000 in Innovation Grants and National Teacher Conference Awards this year.
These programs will benefit students and provide professional development for teachers.

Wayland High School

• Amber Knauf, English and social studies. Magoosh SAT test prep program to increase student SAT scores. Online learning platform. Amount: $2,098

• Karen Gabrielse, AP Chemistry students earn college credits through the College Board examination. Program called Mastering Chemistry in an online learning management system. Amount: $1,190

• Amy Nelson, iPads, apple pencils, and accessories to be used for geometry instruction. Amount: $ 1,493.68

• Julia Goodyke, counselor. Creation of girls group from unsupportive environments to participate in sessions to learn about healthy relationships and lifestyles. Amount: $326.85

• Barbara Greenman, solar car project, exploration engineering and problem solving. Amount: $450

• Kim Moore, Cat’s Corner spirit store request heat press for opportunity to provide Wayland apparel. Amount: $975

• Joseph Youngblood, industrial arts. This is our largest award this year, for a 4’X4’ CNC router for wood working students. The funding is for $6,396.36 of the purchase, as the department has saved $8,782.89 already through fund-raising and donations.

• Rebecca Black, drama director. Student attendance at Michigan Educational Theatre Association festival. Amount: $2,735

• Jeff Kniaz, Council for Exceptional Children Convention and Expo. Amount: $1,389.05

• Erin Hager, Council for Exceptional Children-Special Education Convention. Amount: $1,046.31

Wayland Middle School

Sue Salhaney, middle school student council to continue membership with the Michigan Association of student councils (MASC/MAHS). Leadership building. Amount: $125. Also, presentation on anti-bullying, cyber- bullying and character building. Jim “Basketball” Jones to present.

• Carolyn Whyte. Create of committee led programs that will foster diversity and increase student and staff morale. Amount: $3,000

Pine Street Elementary

• Rebecca Patterson, WMS/Pine Street, art. Professional art display panels. Amount: $2,468

• Susan Boehm, Pine Street News program. MacPro and Final Cut Editing tools for Pine Street News program. Amount: $1,698

• Rebecca Patterson, WMS/Pine Street, National Art Education Association. Amount: $1,480

Dorr Elementary

• Cami Williams, occupational therapist/ancillary staff. ID students with perceptual processing difficulties and remediate by using individualized overlays to support academic performance. Amount: $511.50

• Aleisa Licari, occupational therapy tools for classroom use. Amount: $600

• Robin Sidebotham, social worker. Boys on the Move running group to encourage life skills and physical fitness. Amount: $ 500

Baker Elementary

• Lisa Neely, young fives. Sensory activities for the classroom. Amount: $474.77

• Celeste Diehm, workshops centered on literacy and developing math skills. Amount: $2,235.20

• Nicole Barnes, Baker and Steeby, National Council of Teachers of English Annual Convention. Amount: $1,500
