The Martin Township Board Wednesday evening learned that 11 water wells within the Village of Martin will be tested for free by the Allegan County Health Department later this week.

The wells are not hooked up to the village’s public water system, which is regarded as free of lead and PFAs. They are on properties of residents who elected not to hook up years ago.

Alice Kelsey, village treasurer, said there is some concern because wells at Marshall Plastics have been found to contain PFAs, believed to be carcinogens.

The news comes in the wake of reports of PFAs found in two wells at the old Martin-Watson landfill near the township border on 12th Street just north of the Martin Motor Sports Park, but thus far no connection has been made.

In other business at their meeting Wednesday, board members:

  • Learned that the terms of Township Planning Commission members Pete Zeinstra and Margie Smith will expire Dec. 31. Clerk Rachelle Smit said she has sent them notices asking if they wish to continue. Zeinstra is current chairman and Smith is secretary.
  • Was told by County Commissioner Rick Cain that the Allegan County Medical Facility is broke and there are problem solvers seeking ways to make it solvent. He also reported that indications are strong that the west edge of the county in the Saugatuck-Douglas area is suffering from serious erosion and water damage from encroachment by Lake Michigan.
